God is My Buddy!
by Mel Coburn
What is God? Why can’t we see Him? These questions have been asked me by my religious school students ever since I started teaching school in 1936. When my Bible students at my Temple here in Newton asked these questions last year, in order to give them a simple, understandable answer, I said the words, “God is my buddy!”

God should be a very personal thing. Why should we be ashamed to admit that we have talked with God? Certainly God can be our confidant and our repository of sacred trust.

Dr. Abraham Cronbach in his book, “Judaism for Today,” points out that there is a God of Experience and a God of Report. I submit that the God of Experience is a very close intimate. Some people may be ashamed to admit that they have met God, talked with Him, and that through him they have found strength.

Many times indeed, have I met God. The three times my wife went to the hospital to deliver our three sons, the night that my oldest son was rushed to surgery with a ruptured, gangrenous appendix, the day I purchased my new home, God was with me. These and many more crisis in my life were met with moral strength because I felt that my personal friend was standing with me. I am not ashamed to admit that He has been my strength, rather, I am happy that I have learned this eternal truth. It is this truism above all that will help make my life more fruitful.

It is quite true, particularly with the God of Experience, that God can be your buddy. All that you have to do is open up your heart and talk to Him. Believe me, He is a good listener and I have found him to be a good friend.
